DISGRACED tycoon Asil Nadir has been attacked in jail after complaining that another lag ponged.

The 71-year-old former Polly Peck boss was set upon in tough Belmarsh Prison where he is serving ten years.

Nadir jailed last August for stealing almost 29million was on a medical ward where he was resting alongside six other prisoners after suffering health problems.

A source said: "Apparently, one of the inmates was very unclean and smelt and Nadir asked for him to be washed. It is thought that this inmate who has mental health problems attacked him, although not for requesting he was cleaned.

"The family are furious that he hasn't been given proper protection."

Nadir was caged after being found guilty of stealing millions from his empire.

He had fled the UK before his trial in 1993 and stayed in his native Cyprus before returning two years ago.

Nadir was hauled to court and sentenced.

The judge, Mr Justice Holroyde, slammed him for his crimes, adding: "You were a wealthy man who stole out of pure greed." Nadir will be eligible for release in 2017.

Earlier this year it was revealed 1million had been spent on giving him legal aid for his trial. And last month it was reported Nadir could be released if he pays back Polly Peck investors 5million.

Last night a Justice Ministry spokesman said he could not talk about last week's attack on Nadir, adding: "We do not comment on individual prisoners."
